Why Supima
Why we chose Supima cotton
When you wear the same polo three times a week, fabric matters. Essential Layers is built on the principle that your workday uniform should get better with wear, not worse.
That's why every Core Polo starts with Supima cotton — a choice that prioritizes long-term comfort, durability, and the kind of quiet quality that doesn't need logos.
What is Supima cotton?
Supima is a premium cotton grown exclusively in the United States, representing less than 1% of cotton grown worldwide. It's defined by extra-long staple fibers that fundamentally change how the fabric performs.
Grown exclusively in the USA
Supima cotton is cultivated only in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The specific climate, soil conditions, and growing expertise in these regions produce cotton with exceptional fiber length and strength.

Each bale is tested and certified by the Supima Association
Extra-long staple fibers
The defining characteristic of Supima is fiber length. At 35mm, Supima fibers are 35% longer than regular cotton. This seemingly small difference creates a cascade of performance benefits.
Why longer fibers matter
Extra-long fibers create a fundamentally different fabric. Here's what changes when you move from regular cotton to Supima.
Softer handfeel
Longer fibers mean fewer yarn joins and a naturally silkier touch against the skin. The fabric feels refined, not rough.
Superior strength
Twice as strong as standard cotton. Supima resists tearing and maintains structure through 50+ washes.
Better color retention
Dense fiber structure holds dye more effectively, keeping colors true and vibrant wash after wash.
Less pilling
Longer, smoother fibers reduce the formation of fabric balls that appear on cheaper shirts over time.
Shape retention
Collars stay crisp, shoulders maintain their line, and the fabric doesn't stretch out with wear.
Breathability
Natural cotton breathability enhanced by the refined fiber structure. Comfortable in warm offices.
Supima vs regular cotton
A side-by-side look at what changes when you upgrade the raw material.
| Attribute | Regular cotton | Supima cotton |
|---|---|---|
| Feel on skin | Rougher texture, can feel coarse after washing | Silky-soft handfeel that improves with wear |
| Durability & pilling | Pills quickly, loses structure after 10-15 washes | Minimal pilling, maintains integrity through 50+ washes |
| Shape retention | Stretches out, collar and cuffs lose crispness | Holds shape, collars stay sharp through repeated wear |
| Colorfastness | Fades noticeably after a few months of regular use | Colors stay vibrant and true for years |
Experience Supima for yourself
Reading about extra-long staple fibers only gets you so far. The real difference is in the hand — the softness, the weight, the way it holds up wash after wash.
